29th March 2023 - In a 20-page report to UN Human Rights Council, Javaid Rehman, the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran, detailed a series of human rights violation which have taken place in Iran since 16th September 2022 when Mahsa (Jina) Amini was killed by IRGC forces.
The report, which was presented at the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council on 20th March, begins by detailing "Human rights violations leading up to and since the death of Jina Mahsa Amini", including the circumstances of her death as well as the systematic crack-down on protesters since then.
In other parts of the report, intricate details about the "State policy of mass arbitrary arrests and detention of protesters" is given. The Special Rapporteur reports that at least 18,000 individuals have been unlawfully detained as a result of their participation in protests. These include, journalists, lawyers, civil society activists, students and members of ethnic minority groups like Azerbaijani-Turks.
Furthermore, other general and ongoing human rights concerns were flagged up including what the Special Rapporteur describes as a "sharp increase" in the number of executions which have taken place with ethnic minorities, most notably Baluchis, being disproportionately represented in those figures.
