Global Call to End Executions in Iran Statement by Over 3,000 International Figures from 87 Countries Across Five Continents In Support of the Global Campaign to End Executions in Iran In Response to the Call by Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the Resistance, Coinciding with International Human Rights Day
Over 3,000 leaders, former heads of state, ministers, ambassadors, UN officials, prominent legal experts, legislators, human rights advocates, Nobel laureates, and more than 600 French mayors have endorsed this statement.
Key Points of the Statement:
Support for Maryam Rajavi’s Call The signatories express their support for Mrs. Maryam Rajavi’s call to end executions in Iran and her unwavering commitment to abolishing the death penalty, a principle emphasized in her 10-point plan for Iran’s future for over two decades.
Recent Surge in Executions Since the new president of the Iranian regime took office, the number of executions has risen sharply. In October alone, 152 individuals, including six women and a man who was a minor at the time of his alleged offense, were executed. Among the victims are political dissidents, such as Reza Rasai, who was arrested during the 2022 uprising in Shahriar, Tehran Province.
Reports of Crimes Against Humanity The Independent International Fact-Finding Committee’s March 2024 report identified serious human rights violations in Iran, including murder, torture, and sexual violence, as crimes against humanity. The UN Special Rapporteur, in his July report, described the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners as crimes against humanity and genocide. Professor Javaid Rehman noted that the systematic killing and torture of members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) were carried out with genocidal intent.
Executions as Political Tools The regime uses executions to instill fear and prevent uprisings. Each execution under this regime should be regarded as politically motivated.
International Inaction Fuels Regime’s Impunity
The lack of international response to the regime's decades-long cycle of suppression, massacres, and executions has emboldened its continuation of such practices. Amnesty International reported that 74% of all documented executions worldwide in 2023 occurred in Iran.
Inside and Outside Iran: Widespread Resistance
Since the start of 2024, political prisoners in 23 Iranian prisons have launched the “No to Executions” campaign, holding hunger strikes every Tuesday. This campaign is gaining momentum within Iranian prisons and has sparked a global movement in solidarity.
Global Support for Maryam Rajavi’s Vision
The signatories affirm their support for Mrs. Rajavi’s leadership and her call to abolish executions in Iran. At the International Lawyers’ Summit on August 24, 2024, in Paris, she reiterated her commitment to ending this inhumane practice as part of her vision for a free and democratic Iran.
