Dear Mr. Javaid Rehman,
I am writing on behalf of the Academics in Exile Association (UK) to express our deepest appreciation for your tireless efforts and commitment during your tenure as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran. Your final, comprehensive report detailing the atrocity crimes committed by the Iranian regime, particularly your call for an international investigation into the extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, and systematic repression of political dissent, stands as a powerful testament to your dedication to justice and human rights.
Your courage in producing such a professional and detailed report, especially highlighting the plight of the main victims, the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (PMOI/MEK), has not gone unnoticed. It is disheartening to learn that you have been subjected to a malicious hate campaign orchestrated by the Iranian regime in an attempt to discredit your report. These attacks, echoed by the regime’s agents abroad, are a blatant effort to divert attention from the critical issues your report exposes. The use of social media and misinformation to undermine your work is a well-worn tactic of the regime, but their aggressive targeting of you only underscores how impactful and effective your efforts have been.
Your meticulous reporting on the atrocities committed by the Iranian authorities between 1979 and 1988, including the widespread systematic attacks, mass murders, and the 1988 massacre, has brought global attention to the immense suffering endured by thousands of political and religious dissidents. The fact that your work is met with such fierce resistance reveals the profound weakness of the regime and the undeniable power of truth.
Your focus on the genocidal intent behind the actions targeting the PMOI, including the fatwas issued by senior Iranian officials, has shed light on the religiously motivated extermination policies that were used to justify such crimes. The 1988 massacre, in particular, where thousands of political prisoners were systematically executed and buried in unmarked graves, represents one of the darkest chapters in Iran’s history, and your efforts have ensured that this tragic event will not be forgotten.
I want to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Academics in Exile Association (UK), to strongly condemn the actions of the Iranian regime and its agents, and to offer you our full support. Despite the attacks you have faced, your report stands as a powerful beacon of truth, justice, and accountability for the victims of these egregious human rights violations.
Your call for an international investigative and accountability mechanism is a crucial step toward ensuring that the perpetrators of these heinous crimes are held accountable. You have reminded the world that impunity for such gross human rights violations is not an option, regardless of how much time has passed. The legacy of your work will no doubt influence future efforts to bring justice to those who have long suffered in silence.
As your tenure as Special Rapporteur concludes, please know that your invaluable contributions will continue to resonate with human rights defenders and advocates across the globe. Your work has made a significant difference, and voices like yours are essential to exposing the truth and advancing justice.
Thank you for your unwavering dedication and service to the cause of human rights. We wish you all the best in your continued efforts and future endeavors.
Yours sincerely,
Mr. M Safar Academics in Exile Association (UK)
