Urgent Action Required to Save Six Political Prisoners Sentenced to Death in Iran

Dear

We, members of the Academics in Exile Association, are writing to urgently draw your attention to the imminent execution of six political prisoners in Iran. These individuals have been subjected to brutal torture, months of detention, and grossly unfair trials for their peaceful political activities and support of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI).

Their names and details are as follows:

  1. Abolhassan Montazer (65) – Architect and political prisoner from the 1980s, arrested multiple times. Most recently detained in January 2024, despite severe heart, lung, and kidney diseases, and arthritis.

  2. Pouya Ghobadi (32) – Electrical engineer arrested in March 2024; previously detained twice.

  3. Vahid Bani-Amrian (32) – Management graduate arrested in January 2024, with four years of prior imprisonment.

  4. Babak Alipour (33) – Law graduate arrested in January 2024, previously imprisoned for four years following a 2018 arrest.

  5. Ali Akbar Daneshvarkar (57) – Civil engineer arrested in January 2024.

  6. Mohammad Taghavi (58) – Political prisoner from the 1980s and 1990s, arrested in 2020 and imprisoned for three years. His brothers, Mojtaba and Ali Taghavi, have also been sentenced to imprisonment and exile.

These individuals are at serious risk, and their execution would constitute a grave violation of international human rights standards.

We urge you to:

  1. Publicly condemn these death sentences and the unfair trials leading to them.

  2. Call on the Iranian authorities to immediately halt these executions.

  3. Advocate for the release of these prisoners, given the clear political motivations behind their sentencing.

  4. Mobilize the international community to hold Iran accountable for its violations of human rights, as stipulated under international law.

Your prompt action can make a significant difference in saving the lives of these individuals and ensuring justice is served.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

Sincerely,

Mr M S Manesh

Criminal Sentencing of Six Political Prisoners to Execution on Charges of Membership in the PMOI and Armed RebellionCall for Urgent Action to Save the Lives of Political Prisoners on Death Row

The Iranian regime’s judiciary has sentenced six political prisoners—Abolhassan Montazer, Pouya Ghobadi, Vahid Bani-Amrian, Babak Alipour, Ali Akbar Daneshvarkar, and Mohammad Taghavi—to execution following months of interrogation and torture. The charges against them include "membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK)," "collusion and conspiracy against national security," "armed rebellion against the government," "forming a group to disrupt national security," and "destruction of public property using a launcher." These criminal rulings were issued by Judge Iman Afshari, head of the Revolutionary Court, Branch 26, in Tehran. The same court also sentenced Mojtaba and Ali Taghavi, brothers of Mohammad Taghavi, to imprisonment and exile.

Abolhassan Montazer, 65, an architecture graduate and a political prisoner from the 1980s, has been arrested and imprisoned multiple times, including in 2018 and 2020. He was last arrested in January 2024 and suffers from heart, lung, and kidney diseases, and arthritis.

Pouya Ghobadi, 32, an electrical engineer, was arrested in March 2024. He had previously been arrested twice.

Vahid Bani-Amrian, 32, holding a master’s degree in management, was arrested in January 2024. He has spent a total of four years in prison across multiple arrests since 2017.

Babak Alipour, 33, a law graduate, was arrested in January 2024. He had earlier been detained in November 2018 in Rasht and served four years in prison.

Ali Akbar Daneshvarkar, 57, a civil engineer, was arrested in January 2024.

Mohammad Taghavi, 58, a political prisoner from the 1980s and 1990s, was previously arrested in 2020 and imprisoned for three years on charges of association with the PMOI/MEK.

Mojtaba and Ali Taghavi were sentenced solely because they are the brothers of Mohammad Taghavi.

The criminal Ali Khamenei is futilely attempting to prevent the people's uprising and the overthrow of the despised Velayat-e Faqih regime through executions of Iran’s children. However, rebellious youth will shake the ground beneath his feet.

The Iranian Resistance calls on the United Nations Security Council, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Human Rights Council, and other relevant UN bodies, as well as the European Union and its member states, to take immediate action to save these prisoners' lives and secure the release of all political prisoners.
