The UN investigation group submitted its first report to the UN Human Rights Council, declaring the following, March 8 2024
The regime is responsible for the deadly violence against 22-year-old Mahsa Jina Amini.
The regime used "unnecessary and disproportionate deadly force" to suppress the popular uprising that followed Amini's murder.
The regime employed methods that "constitute crimes against humanity, especially murder, imprisonment, torture, rape, and other forms of sexual violence, persecution, enforced disappearance, and other inhumane acts" as part of a widespread and systematic attack against civilians.
The investigation group's report confirms that the regime has committed serious human rights abuses, emphasizing the need for international action to halt the impunity prevailing in Iran for four decades.
The Iranian women's struggle for a free and democratic Iran led to a nationwide boycott of the regime's sham elections to the parliament and the Expert Council on March 1st, with the message: "It's not time for elections. It's time for a revolution."
The Iranian opposition leader, Maryam Rajavi, praised the Iranian people's determination and described the nationwide boycott as a resounding rejection of the clerical religious dictatorship. The Iranian people have clearly expressed their will to overthrow the clergy that has seized power at the expense of the people's sovereignty.
UK and the EU must stand on the right side of history and support the Iranian women and the Iranian people in their struggle to liberate Iran from the oppression of the clergy.
Therefore, the association of academics in exile urges the UK government, together with the EU, to:
Designate the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization and impose sanctions on the regime's top leadership, including the Supreme Leader, Khamenei, and President Raisi.
Refer the regime's documented human rights violations and the investigation group's report to the Security Council with the intention of prosecuting the perpetrators in an international court or the ICC.
Extend the mandate of the UN investigation group and the special rapporteur for Iran by another year during the upcoming session of the UN Human Rights Council.
